Filip Mattens

Filip Mattens studied architecture in Ghent and Brussels and philosophy in Leuven. He obtained his doctoral degree with a dissertation on the phenomenology of space at the Institute of Philosophy in 2009. Filip has been a visiting researcher in Berlin, Paris and Cologne and a Fellow in Philosophy at Harvard University. He was a post-doctoral fellow at the Research Foundation – Flanders (FWO) until he became an assistant professor at the Faculty of Architecture at KU Leuven in 2014. His work focuses on sensory experience, image and spatiality. His field of expertise ranges from phenomenology to philosophical anthropology and philosophy of culture. Recent publications include an article on the relation between the experience of architectural space and photographical representations, published in the Journal of Aesthetics and Art Criticism, a reconception of the sense of touch published in Australasian Journal of Philosophy, an investigation into the relation between objects and the senses which appeared in Logical Analysis and History of Philosophy, and a study on the relation between the epistemology of spatial perception and the human hand, published as a chapter in an interdisciplinary anthology on the human hand for MIT Press.
